Holy Trinity Catholic High School Donates $1500 to United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk!

On the night of Wednesday, May 18, Holy Trinity held a United Way Glow Dance, where all proceeds were donated to United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk. Principal Humberto Cacilhas and student council co-presidents Imogene Stortini and Berlyn Rymer along with Special Education Department Head Tara Williams, presented the United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk a check for $1500, which was raised at the glow dance.

United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk presented Holy Trinity  with two 2015 Campaign Awards. Student Council co-presidents Imogene Stortini and Berlyn Rymer accepted the awards for Top Catholic Secondary School, as well as the Spirit Award.

United Way greatly appreciates all of the continued support and efforts that went into fundraising for the glow dance event.

United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk Hires Summer Student

Through the Canadian Summer Jobs Program, United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk has hired a summer student for their “Special Events Coordinator” position.

Jill deBoer of Cayuga has shown evidence of her experience in fundraising and working with non-profit organizations. All the way from raising money to build a water well in Africa, to recently getting back from her fifth mission trip to Haiti, Jill has a heart for helping others. When Jill finishes her Child and Youth Worker Program at Sheridan College, she hopes to work closer with some of United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk’s member agencies.

“I am beyond excited to start planning and coordinating events in our nearby communities that will help raise funds for United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk,” states Jill.

True Experience is the newest member agency of the United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk. With the support of United Way, clients of True Experience enjoy Club TRUE, which is a social recreation program designed to foster a healthy lifestyle.

United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk supports a network of twelve member agencies that provide sixteen programs that help residents of both counties. These programs focus on three key areas: 1) From Poverty to Possibility, 2) All That Kids Can Be, 3) Healthy People, Strong Communities.

“We are excited to partner with True Experience on a program that helps so many people in Dunnville live fuller lives, while enjoying a sense of belonging”, said Brittany Burley. “We look forward to future involvement in this community.”

Brittany Burley Named New Executive Director

The Board of Directors of the United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Executive Director, Brittany Burley.

Brittany Burley brings a wealth of knowledge to the position, including a background in marketing, business administration, and account management.  Her resume highlights roles at myFM, the Centre for Management Development, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Health Canada.  Her non-profit experience includes work with the United Way, Simcoe Little Theatre, Prince’s Charities of Canada, and Futurpreneur Canada (formerly Canadian Youth Business Foundation).  Burley is a graduate of the Paul J. Hill School of Business at the University of Regina with a Bachelor of Business Administration, majoring in Marketing.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to work for an organization that positively impacts so many lives,” states Burley.  “The United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk is an important part of our community and adds great value to it.  I see a lot of potential to increase our impact to help even more people in need.  We are fortunate to be living in a caring community and I look forward to all of the positive change that we can make together.”

United Way Launches Annual Campaign at Barbeques

The United Way of Haldimand Norfolk officially launched its 2015 campaign on Friday, August 28th with two events. These took place at Turkstra Lumber in Simcoe and Dunnville both hosted fundraising barbeques which the United Way used as a springboard to announce its 2015 campaign goal.

“We’re going to raise $450,000 this year,” said Neil Dring, executive director. The money will go to support 33 social service programs throughout Haldimand and Norfolk counties which are provided by 12 member agency partners.

Over the next three months, the United Way’s volunteer campaign cabinet will be approaching local businesses and asking them to participate in workplace campaigns, host fundraising events and make donations. “Workplace campaigns are the bread and butter of United Way support,” said Dring, thanking everyone who has participated in the past and encouraging new supporters.

United Way also announced a new funding initiative called Community Venture Grants which will provide one-time funding for local social service ventures requiring seed-money or improvements. Sixty-thousand dollars has been set aside for community groups meeting the United Way’s community investment requirements. Applications for funding and criteria are available on the United Way’s website.

Kelly Morin-Currie elected new president at 2015 AGM

PORT DOVER – The United Way of Haldimand Norfolk elected Kelly Morin-Currie as its new president during its annual general meeting on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 held at the Erie Beach Hotel. Morin-Currie, a Simcoe resident and Teachers’ Bargaining Unit Chief Negotiator with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation District 23, had been the acting president for the past year.

Also elected to the Board of Directors were Sharon Armstrong, Michael Badowoy, Douglas Barber, Belinda Benko, Brittany Bray, Scott Buchanan, Brian Jones, Janet Moerman, David Sykes and Marie Trainer.

Over 75 people attended the meeting which included a fish and roast beef dinner courtesy of the Schneider family and Erie Beach Hotel. It was reported that the United Way fell just short of its 2014 fundraising goal of $450,000 which was an admirable achievement considering the campaign team was comprised only of board members due to the office being short-staffed.

Also at the meeting, the new executive director Neil Dring was introduced.

New Executive Director Named

The United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk has a new executive director. Neil Dring assumed the post on May 6, 2015.

Dring, 55, is a resident of Caledonia but grew up in Port Dover. He has over 35 years experience in the newspaper business with stops at The Simcoe Reformer, The Hamilton Spectator, Grand River Sachem and Haldimand Press.

“I’m very excited about this new chapter in my career,” said Dring. “I’ve always enjoyed supporting volunteer organizations with my role at the newspaper by providing publicity… now I can assist them by providing funding.”

The United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk supports over 33 programs through 13 member agencies.

The United Way will be holding its annual general meeting Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at The Erie Beach Hotel in Port Dover. Tickets are $25.00 each and still available by calling 519-426-5660.

“I’m looking forward to working with people in both Haldimand and Norfolk to raise funds so we may continue supporting and building stronger, healthier local communities,” said Dring.
