2018 Funding Applications Open

2018 Funding Applications Open

Applications are open for United Way of Haldimand & Norfolk’s 2018 funding. Any non-profit organization operating in Haldimand or Norfolk County is eligible to apply. Funding is offered in one to three year terms.
UWHN works to better the lives of residents in Haldimand and Norfolk. Funding for these non-profit organizations is raised through the annual campaign.

“Everything we raise during the year goes directly to programs in Haldimand and Norfolk,” said UWHN Executive Director Brittany Burley. “Our 2017 campaign goal is $375,000. We’re almost there, but we still need the support of the community.”

Funding for programs is determined through an allocations committee made up entirely of volunteers from Haldimand and Norfolk. Anyone who is interested in being a part of this committee can contact Brittany for more information.

It is the goal of United Way to move people from poverty to possibility, to build healthy people and strong communities and to help kids be all that they can be. Every donation to United Way goes directly to programs that support these goals. And it is all made possible through the dedication and generosity of our community.

If you are interested in applying for funding, please reach out to Brittany at [email protected].

Us & Them Film Screening – Sat. Oct. 14

United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk presents screening of Us & Them

Us & Them is a documentary film that chronicles the real-life, ten-year journey of four homeless people and their struggles with addiction. Directed by Krista Loughton and Jennifer Abbot (The Corporation), the film is punctuated with First Nations wisdom and Dr. Gabor Maté’s insight into the roots of addiction. Everyone who watches the film has been deeply moved, and never look at the homeless in the same way again. Watching this film helps you to realize that there is no difference between “us and them.”

Filmmaker Krista Loughton will be attending the screening in Simcoe to offer a Q&A period after the show.

The film will be screened in Simcoe at The Strand Theatre at 55 Robinson St. on October 14 at 4:00pm. Admission to the event is free, though a donation to United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk is appreciated.

2017 Campaign Kick-Off: Jail & Bail

2017 Campaign Kick-Off: Jail & Bail

Once again, it’s time to put away our swim suits and bring our sweaters out of storage. Fall is upon us, and so is United Way of Haldimand and Norfolk’s 2017 Campaign Kick-Off!

This year, the OPP will be “arresting” Haldimand and Norfolk residents who are -usually- upstanding citizens! Once they’re in jail, these jailbirds must raise their bail money to get out! All proceeds will be invested in community programs supporting youth, children, individuals and families living in poverty!

The event will take place on Tuesday September 26 at the Norfolk County Administration Building from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, and the Haldimand County Administration Building from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Anyone interested in becoming a jailbird should call the United Way office at 519-426-5660.

Jailbirds will be given an envelope to collect their pledges in. You’ll be in jail until you’ve raised your bail money. You get to pick your own bail amount (most jailbirds pick between $500-$1,000)! You can collect your bail money from friends, family, co-workers and even a personal donation. Donations over $20 are eligible for tax receipts. Credit card donations can be made through our website. If your bail amount is reached before the event, you’ll be in jail for just fifteen minutes. The maximum “sentence” is two hours, even if you don’t meet your bail.

Friends can even bribe the guards to keep you in jail longer! A $50 bribe will keep you in the clinker for an extra fifteen minutes. Again, the maximum sentence is two hours, so you’ll be free to go no matter what, after you’ve served your time.

Even if you don’t reach your bail amount, all donations are greatly appreciated. It’s through the support of people like you that we are able to help people move from poverty to possibility, help kids grow up to be all that they can be, and build strong communities with healthy people in them.

Thank you.

Day of Caring with Farm Credit Canada

Day of Caring with Farm Credit Canada!

Farm Credit Canada is committed to making Haldimand-Norfolk a better place through the Day of Caring!

On June 6, employees from Farm Credit Canada’s Simcoe location took part in a Day of Caring at Haldimand-Norfolk REACH. The group spent the day completing yard work for a group home. This home helps youth to gain life skills and have a safe space to live.

These skills include teaching the teens how to budget their money, cook, and clean. With these skills they will have the experience to move out on their own.

Before
The front garden before the work began

These Day of Caring events allow groups to make a real change at an organization that helps our community. This work is important to do to keep the organizations running smoothly. It also allows volunteers to see the impact that these organizations have on our community!

When the day began the front garden was overrun with weeds, leaving the volunteers with a lot of work to do. However, they were all committed to the task and got right to work. Not even the rain could stop them!

Day of Caring REACH
The group hard at work

Throughout the day the volunteers were able learn about the amazing work that Haldimand-Norfolk REACH does with youth. They were able to make a real change for the teens living in the home, shaping a beautiful garden and renewing their yard.

It was a lot of work and a lot of fun, which left a stunning garden and yard for the youth to enjoy. The participants found the experience very rewarding and the house’s staff and residents were thrilled to see the amazing change.

Thank you to Farm Credit Canada for their hard work and ongoing commitment to our community.

If you’re interesting in completing a Day of Caring, reach out to Executive Director, Brittany Burley at [email protected].
